This is getting really, really bad.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Those bubbles are squishy. Which is nice.

And I don’t have the money to pay a shop to fix this. Great.

That's a good question. Obviously it was patched but when we bought the car there were no obvious signs it was. And I don't know how water is getting in. All I know is I'm pissed off.

I can imagine you are. Maybe from somewhere behind it? Any cracks or gaps from the patch job behind the paint could cause it.

I feel like there's a sunroof drain that goes down to that wheel well that might have crack in it. When we grind out the shitty patch (because let's be real I don't have much other choice) I'll have to look back there.

Ah, didn’t think about that. That could be a possibility then for sure. Hopefully it’s not too far gone behind it.

I've looked behind it before once I noticed the mess starting to form, and it looked like it was certainly fixable. Just gonna take some time and patience and most likely a sizeable chunk of cash...

All three of my cars (90s Preludes) have small degrees of rust. The garage queen has two spots on the passenger’s side, but the driver’s side is rust-free. The other two cars are symmetrical.

Thankfully outside of the trunk lid this is all the rust the car has. And the trunk lid just needs the rust sanded off and painted over. This though? Eeeep.

That’s not too bad then. For my 1991 Si (the aforementioned garage queen) I have a pair of rust-free quarter panels to either go onto the car at some point in the future or to go with it if I decide to do the unthinkable and sell it, which I’m leaning towards doing because I’m going to need a new daily within the next year or two. My project car is originally from the rust belt, though...I’m just going to attempt to contain it as much as possible.

The weird thing is is that there were no signs any repairs had been done to the panel until about late summer, of all times. I figured I’d get to it but it seems to be decaying at a scary quick rate now.

The bad thing about this is I’m trying to sell the car right now so I can buy something with a manual and this certainly isn’t going to help.

I wish. Fortunately that's the only spot of rust on the truck and I nipped it in the bud before it got worse.

The only car of mine where the rust is spreading is the DD, since it’s the only one I (intentionally) drive in bad weather. I knew what I was getting into when I bought the project car, at least, and it’s fortunately held steady.

Before I fiberglassed it, I could put my hand through my P71's fender in two different spots, and three fingers through my rear dogleg; I also have no rocker panels, and the pinch weld which would hold them to the doorframe and floor pans are not there - if I didn’t have a frame the car would have broken in half by now.

That said - this doesn’t look too bad, and could probably be fixed fairly easily in a DIY manner. Opening it up may not be pretty, but if you get it cleaned up and seal/treat the edges, it will stop the spread until you’re able to patch it.

I know you said you don’t have money to pay a shop, but even if you just go your local auto parts and grab a couple rattle cans, it would be better to stop that asap.

Keep your chin up, man. It can be patched. Now, if you want to talk about terminal rust, I had a Fiat 124 Spider that spent its entire life garaged, in Tennessee, and it had chassis rails that were rotten completely through.

The only thing worse than old Italian car rust is old Japanese car rust, though.

Two years older, and no rot to speak of... Well, maybe a tiny bit of superficial rust on the rocker cover, but that’s it.

I think that was some dipshit’s attempt at blending the paint. Im gonna take it to get an estimate either this week or next because I have no choice, this has to be fixed. Hopefully they can tell me what's up.
